Curriculum Intent
At St John Rigby, the curriculum is designed to encourage sustained mastery through carefully considered coverage and progression in both substantive (factual) knowledge and procedural knowledge (skills).
Each subject uses both knowledge and skills combined to enrich the learning experience, allowing pupils to acquire knowledge in order to learn more complex knowledge and skills, and providing opportunities to practice and apply them over time in order to master them. This includes regular knowledge retrieval and application, as well as revisiting and refining skills.
Subjects are centred around enquiry questions and first-hand learning experiences to engage learners and encourage enquiring minds, as well as allow our pupils to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, independent, critical thinkers. The use of The Universal Thinking Frameworks and Structural Learning promote the language for learning as well as positive attitudes and pupil’s ownership of the learning process.
As a school we have designed our curriculum through sequenced learning opportunities which are built into a progression model across the school and beyond – we have also collaborated with our Catholic Secondary School to ensure pupils’ prior learning is built upon as they continue their learning journey.
IMPLEMENTATION
In order to translate our vision into practice, we will:
- Give our pupils choice in all aspects of their learning
- Provide opportunities for children to acquire and practice vocabulary and language
- Provide learning opportunities that develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable pupils to learn independently
- Provide clarity of instruction and understanding so that pupils can apply their learning in any context
- Enable a learning environment that stimulates enquiry, imagination and creativity
- Plan meaningful opportunities to learn beyond the classroom
- Encourage pupils to set high expectations and aspirations for themselves
- Plan learning opportunities so that pupils can be accountable for their own learning
- Plan opportunities that motivate, challenge and are accessible to all pupils
- Allow the time to learn and practice the social and emotional competencies required to prepare pupils for the next phase of their learning
IMPACT
As a result, we will see learners who:
- Reflect the teaching and ethos of our Catholic faith
- Confidently contribute to the learning of themselves and others
- Ask and answer their own questions and those of others
- Use and apply language competently across all subjects
- Access resources and help independently commensurate with their age
- Can make links in learning because they know more and remember more
- Have the self-belief in their ability to achieve.
- Are ready for the next stage of their learning journey and are ready for life in modern Britain.
