St John Rigby Catholic Primary School

Catholic Social Teaching is integral to the life of our school. It provides a moral framework rooted in Scripture, Tradition, and papal documents, guiding how Catholics interact with society to promote justice, peace, and the common good. It emphasises human dignity, solidarity, and care for the vulnerable, aiming to build a just world. It is something that we integrate into our R.E. curriculum, Collective Worship, Catholic Life and all aspects of school life.

Core Principles of Catholic Social Teaching

  • Human Dignity: The foundational principle that every person is made in God's image and deserves respect and protection from conception to natural death.

  • The Common Good: Social conditions that allow all people to reach their full potential, emphasising that society exists to benefit everyone, not just a few.

  • Preferential Option for the Poor: A mandate to prioritise the needs of the vulnerable, marginalised, and poor.

  • Solidarity: Recognising that we are all brothers and sisters, connected to and responsible for one another.

  • Subsidiarity: Issues should be handled at the most local level possible, with larger institutions supporting rather than replacing smaller ones.

  • Dignity of Work: The economy must serve people, and work should be meaningful and justly rewarded.

  • Care for Creation: A calling to be stewards of the environment, respecting the earth for future generations.

Catholic Social Teaching supports us to put our faith into action.
